Skills Training Programme
The Cape Town Refugee Centre initiated this programme to help unemployed women and men, as well as those who do not have enough income to become self-supportive, by enabling them to acquire practical and technical skills. The programme aims to decrease dependency on emergency services to meet basic needs.
After prospective clients have expressed their training needs, intensive counseling and advice is offered by the Job Creation Facilitator. CTRC staff assist with the process of college selection, course selection and enrollment, and other application needs in order to improve a client’s employment and self-employment opportunities. The Job Creation Facilitator makes regular visits to colleges to monitor and evaluate the progress of trainees.
For effective training to take place CTRC has established partnerships with accredited and reputable institutions including colleges, universities and Service SETAS for outsourcing their training. The average duration of courses offered by these training agencies is 3 to 6 months. Courses that are popular among refugees/asylum seekers are:
| • |

The Centre has found that some training graduates, especially women, lack some essential interpersonal skills, self-esteem, as well as general confidence. Our goal is to address the needs of graduates by providing emotional motivation to start taking charge of their own lives. With the availability of funds, CTRC would like to enroll refugee women and men in interpersonal skills trainings and workshop with competent training institutes.
The Cape Town Refugee Centre is in need of funds to support these life-transforming programmes. If you would like to help, click here for the various ways that you or your organization can get involved.
