Project Goal and Objectives

The project goal is to simultaneously strengthen refugees awareness and participation in democratic processes in host communities, and enhance local government capacity for participative governance in order to promote tolerance and social cohesion in the Western Cape and KwaZuluNatal provinces.


The specific objectives are:

-To strengthen the awareness and participation of 2250 adult and youth refugees in community-based governance structures and processes in order to promote their integration in host communities;

-To enhance the capacity of 550 local government and front-line service providers to promote and facilitate refugees participation in democratic governance;

-To provide continuing capacity development, mentoring and technical support to community-based refugee organisations to strengthen their capacities and increase their sustainability;

-To put in place an effective monitoring system to ensure that achievements and lessons learnt are properly documented and communicated to key stakeholders in order to optimize the project's reach and impact.


Project Activities  

We achieve our goal and objectives through the implementation of an integrated civic education strategy that includes:

-Capacity development, mentoring and support to community-based refugee organisations;

-Conducting an advocacy campaign to raise awareness among asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, local host communities, community-based structures, and provincial and local government departments;

-Civic education training workshops for refugee adults and youth;

-Civic education training workshops for municipal managers, ward Councillors, police, and other front-line service providers;

-Community dialogues and round-table discussions to bring together asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, local host communities, community-based structures, and provincial and local government departments.
